Pentecost Pilgrimage in Place
"People of God, Call Down the Spirit!"
Saturday, May 30, 2020
More than 30 pilgrims from a wide variety of Christian traditions prepared our bodies, hearts, and spirits to celebrate Pentecost 2020 with a Pentecost Pilgrimage in Place: People of God, Call Down the Spirit! The basic "shape" of our pilgrimage included the following:

1) Pentecost Pilgrims Orientation (Online): Saturday May 23 at 9AM
2) Opening Gathering & Prayer Service (Online): Friday, May 29 at 7 pm.
3) Personal Pentecost Pilgrimage: Saturday, May 30 all day
Pilgrims walked in Boston, San Antonio, Arizona, Kentucky, and throughout New Mexico. Pilgrims walked outdoors in neighborhoods and cities and wilderness. Pilgrims walked indoors in community living facilities. Pilgrims carried prayer intentions, and prayer rocks with them on their journeys.
4) Closing Gathering & Prayer Service (Online): Saturday May 30, 7 pm

Pentecost 2020 Pilgrimage Song: Call Down the Spirit (by Sylvia Miller-Mutia)
O Pilgrims, won't you call down the Spirit? (Holy Spirit,Come!)
O Pilgrims, won't you call down the Spirit? (Holy Spirit,Come!)
Come Fire, Come Wind (Holy Spirit,Come!)
Come Life, Come Power (Holy Spirit,Come!)
As we walk, we carry the prayers (Holy Spirit,Come!)
We carry the prayers, we carry the burdens (Holy Spirit,Come!)
We are One, though we are many (Holy Spirit,Come!)
on this road, we journey together (Holy Spirit,Come!)
God give us strength to continue the journey (Holy Spirit,Come!)
Open our hearts and carry us onward (Holy Spirit,Come!)
Note: This is a great song to plug in your own verses, based on your own prayers and intentions, for example:
Come love, come freedom (Holy Spirit,Come!)
Come hope, come healing (Holy Spirit,Come!)
For Paul, for Patty (Holy Spirit,Come!)
For couples, for the lonely (Holy Spirit,Come!)
etc.

What is the Spirit revealing as you walk?
Where is the Spirit moving?
What do you see that calls you to prayer?
What do you see that calls you to give thanks?

- I walked along the bosque this morning... I carried a rock that I wrote Peace, Hope, and Love on it and am including pictures I took along the way. I also read some from a prayer book that used to be my mom's and I believe it was passed down from my grandparents. It is titled Confidence in God and has many short inspirational readings in it. I would like to share one with you, from one of the attached photos:
Confidence in God
"But he that had received the one talent came and said: Lord, I know that Thou art a hard man." - Matt. xxv. 24.
If we don't look upon God as a hard man we have every reason to congratulate ourselves. We say we think Him merciful, kind, loving, but in our hearts we look upon Him as hard. Three-quarters of the troubles of good people come from this. He feels intensely our misconception of Him. We look upon Him as a hard grasping man, who wants to get all He can out of us and give nothing in return. And woe betide us if we fail to satisfy Him. This is utterly wrong.
If God has ever shown me any love He must love me still. God does not care for me one day and hate me the next. He is not capricious or inconstant like man. Above everything, God wants my love, and with love come happiness and enthusiasm in His service. We think: I have only one talent; others have five. Therefore I will do nothing but bury mine. I will run no risks. But each of our temperaments and characters has been fitted exactly, thought out from all time to suit our lives. What others have would not suit me. What we have we don't value; what we have not we desire. Do not say, God evidently, form my capabilities, does not care much for me; does not expect much from me. God craves your love. Ask, ask, ask for graces and you will assuredly get them. - Walking with a purpose just feels different... I held everyone’s concerns and prayers in my heart and made my time on the trail a walking meditation. Reading the Covid-19 obituaries aloud felt like a way to honor people who really can’t even have a memorial service or funeral at this time. While I was finishing the hike, two astronauts successfully launched for space in a Falcon Heavy rocket. This experience reminded me that we are all an important part of life on this amazing planet. We can feel grief and joy in nearly the same moment. We can look to the heavens for comfort while we are walking in shadow.
- My granddaughter painted rocks with faith sayings....we walked to 16 churches. We placed a rock at each and silently raised our thoughts in prayer.
- Today's walk was so interesting. I started out with prayer intentions springing from a place of frustration about the disunity I see in so many areas of life right now, and ended up having my own thinking challenged. I will be reflecting on this walk for a while. I've attached a few pictures of things that gave me peace and hope...
- What a glorious morning for our Pentecost Pilgrimage in Place! I began my journey at 6:15 this morning, walking toward the sun coming up over the Sandias. Singing the "Call Down the Spirit" song that you wrote made me feel as if I were walking together with all of the other pilgrims... I have attached many of the photos I took. Nearly all of them represent places I felt the beauty, the presence and the work of the Spirit around me. One photo of clouds even looked to me like the symbol of a dove ascending. The last 3 photos are of plastic bags carelessly tossed into plants and trees - places that were indicative of Creation crying out in need of the Spirit to work within us to heal the earth.
- Each of my photos represents a call to prayer: Pray for Healing. Pray for Joy. Pray for Self-Control. Pray for Trust. Pray for Mother Earth. Pray for charity. Pray for Gentleness. Pray for cancer patients. Pray for C19 patients and caregivers. Welcome the morning.
